How to Prepare for a Professional House Cleaning

By Samantha · Solas Professional Cleaning Services · Updated October 19, 2026

A little preparation helps your cleaner spend their time cleaning instead of moving things around. Here is how to get ready for your visit.

1. Put away clutter and valuables

Clear counters, floors and bathroom surfaces of everyday items, and put away anything fragile, personal or valuable. Cleaners can work around some things, but clear surfaces get cleaner faster.

2. Tell your cleaner what matters to you

  • Which rooms or spots are the priority?
  • Are there surfaces that need special care, like natural stone, specialty finishes or leather?
  • Are there products you prefer or want avoided?

3. Plan for pets

Let your cleaner know about pets ahead of time. For everyone's comfort and safety, pets should be crated or in a closed room during the visit.

4. Plan how your cleaner gets in

You do not need to be home. Many clients leave a key, a door code or use a lockbox. Share entry instructions and any alarm details when you book.

5. Do not pre-clean

You do not need to clean before the cleaner arrives. Tidying is enough. The point is to hand the cleaning over.

6. Share photos when you request a quote

A few photos of the kitchen, bathrooms and one wall of each room help give an accurate quote.

7. Expect your first visit to be a deep clean

With Solas, a new client's first visit is a deep clean. That sets a clean baseline, so regular visits afterward are lighter and consistent.
